Bunkering is to supply any fuels to ships. A person that supplies this and works with it in general is called a bunker trader. It is called bunkers and bunkering because it originates from when the fuel was actually stored in bunkers. To this day it means to store fuel for ships on the ships in tanks.
Occurrence of bunkering
Bunkering started many years ago and has sort changed meaning. As explained, it is to store fuel for ships in tanks today and for that you need a bunker supplier. Yet it has not always been the meaning of that. Bunkering happens different places but not everywhere. There are some bigger ports for bunkering. Singapore is currently the largest bunkering port in the world.
The ship operator
The ship owner/operator is required to make sure that everything on and around the boat is safe and good to go. Other than that, the ship owner/operator is also required to ensure that there is an appropriate number of staff on the ship and that the ship is fully bunkered. On top of those to very important things, there need to be a plan for the route. Of this is not fully planned and adds up to the contract it may be deemed as deviation. Deviation is to break the contract and it is a very serious thing. There can be a change in the route if it is on an agreement. If the ship owner/operator has not bunkered or fueled enough and the ship is mid-sea and cannot do anything, it is also seen as deviation.
Bunker fuel in general is any type of fuel for a ship to power the ships engines. This kind of fuel is mostly very toxic to aquatic life. It is harmful to fish and shellfish and other sorts of life in the ocean. Overall, there is three kind of bunker fuels. A, B and C. C is the thickest one and is also the most toxic one. It is harder to work with because it mostly has to be mixed up with diesel or another kind of thinner fuel. The bunker fuel is a dark brown color. Almost black. It can be black too. It is dangerous for humans too. It can cause different types of irritation. It can be such as eye and skin irritation. If a person is in contact with bunker fuel for a longer amount of time it can actually cause damage to the organs and damage fertility. In some cases, it can be deadly. It only happens if stagnant in storage tanks are left and it can make hydrogen sulphide which can cause death.
